Putting Trikes to Work in Old Town
Ground Score Association is using a fleet of trikes to pick up trash in Old Town and organizers say they want to expand into other parts of the city. The nonprofit offers low-barrier to entry jobs and hires people who've lived on the streets. In this video you'll meet leaders of Ground Score Association and two Ground Score staffers who now pick up trash - by trike! - from the same streets they used to live on. #homeless #portlandoregon #portland #tricycle #trikes #cargobike

Can You Bike From North Portland to the Airport?

In this video, I ride from Peninsula Park in north Portland to the start of the new airport path near NE 82nd Way and Air Cargo Rd. Along the way you'll see a great neighborhood greenway, really bad ...

Dumpsta D in Portland

I ran into Portland bike personality Dumpsta D at an event a few days ago and did a short interview. I met him in 2005 when I first starting showing up to bike events in Portland but lost touch with him and hadn't talked since 2008 or so. He's known as a Street Roots newspaper vendor, artist, and poet - and he always rides the coolest bikes. He's known for finding free bike parts (hence his "du...

The Pedalpalooza Bike Summer Bleeps and Bloops Ride is described by its leader Mykle Hansen as “an acoustic bicycle adventure.” And was it ever! Once we rolled out, the group morphed into a mobile, melismatic mob that meandered the ...

Uh, technically the bike path was to your left in the road the whole time you were on the sidewalk. That is why there is a white line in the road like that. But granted, it's super narrow. I'd also probably just get on the sidewalk for that portion.

A simple bridge that could carry both motorized and non-motorized traffic safely and efficiently across the river is what should be planned planned and built. It's typical that people who live everywhere except for where these bridge projects are proposed seem to lean toward the largest, most extravagant and most expensive designs. We don't need an aerial biking and walking park with observation platforms over the water. That's what people from Portland think they need in our backyard to enhance their tourist experience, but it's not what we need. We just need a safe, functional bridge. Same goes for the bridge in Vancouver. If you absolutely must build a new bridge, then do it; but it doesn't need to be a 10-mile long mega project.

If even a modsest number of airport employees now switch to seasonal bike use to get back and forth to work every day, this path is a good expenditure of a pretty small amount of money. Could it be better, or improved? Sure. But if it doesn't prove to increase the number of cyclists going to the airport...and thus less car traffic and parking issues.....then more time and money shouldn't be spent on it. But I bet it will prove its worth----hopefully, without anyone getting hurt or killed before the remaining dangers are remedied!

Shared greenway bike lanes with cars are such a joke. They didn't work in Berkeley when I lived there and don't work well here either. So many times I've been on one and have had a car on my ass that doesn't understand why I'm taking up the lane. Especially the newer independent delivery drivers whose livelihood depends on making as many deliveries as possible. It's a very half-assed solution.

    • @TheJohnreeves

They work pretty well here, but they shouldn't be on every road. This doesn't look like a good place for one. Although they're not approachable for new riders, probably seems extra sketchy to ride with vehicles.

@@TheJohnreeves Tell that to the guy in the newer Kia that was a couple feet from my rear tire for a couple of blocks on a greenway in North Portland a couple of days ago. Until there's any enforcement, Portland drivers will be Portland drivers. Without that, these shared lanes seem aspirational and might even give riders a false sense of security, especially on older greenways where the painted graphics are super faded.
